PROGRAMS
Head
Start
Head Start is a program designed to make sure the children of low-income and homeless families are fully prepared when it is time for them to start public school. The program provides pre-school education that meets nationally recognized standards; healthy, nutritious meals and snacks; and a variety of health services, including full services for children with disabilities. Head Start also provides family advocates to work with parents and assist them in finding and using community resources.
USDA
Food Service
A healthy diet plays a vital role in improving the quality of life for all children. Those enrolled in the Head Start program receive delicious, nutritious meals, including breakfast, lunch and a snack each day for free. This food service program is funded by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) and is administered locally by NEED as an important part of the Head Start program.
Housing Rental Assistance
There are several types of housing rental assistance available from the federal government for low-income families. One type, called Section 8, is administered locally by the NEED office and helps families living in Nash and Edgecombe counties. It is designed to create affordable housing choices for low-income families and permits them to choose from privately owned rental housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments.
Family
Development
Services offered by NEED, Inc. to help in family development are concentrated on eliminating poverty and making families self-sufficient.
This is accomplished by helping adult family members become more employable. NEED helps these employable adults acquire and develop the basic skills necessary to find and keep a secure job. This includes education, training, job search, job preparation, and job placement.
